Hurricane Florence is impatiently anticipated by surfing community of the US East Coast. It is supposed to hit near Outer Banks, but there is significant air movement inland too. And, it looks like it has something for the Great Lakes surfers. Let's try tracking surfing forecast and conditions on the Great Lakes surf spots with web cameras. "Hurricane hype center" is coined by Ben Gravy, check out his video blog entries in the material below! |
Ashtabula has a bunch of beaches, but most of them are private. Watch this video of Ben Gravy attempting to surf somewhere in the vicinity. Yet, there are at least 3 known surf spots accessible to public:
Walnut Beach Park - sandy beach, may get waves on W, SW and strong NE winds. Watch video for sample conditions in April. Established kiting and windsurfing spot.
Saybrook Park - sandy beach may be blocked now.
Geneva State Park - nice sandy beach.
There is only chance for surfing on W, SW, strong NE winds. |
Beaches at Mentor-On-The-Lake start generating surf on NW, W, SW winds.
Headlands Beach State Park - Nice sandy beach. Used mostly for windsurfing and kiting.
Mentor Beach Park - I honestly don't see where exactly to surf there (maybe there is some other Metro Park in the area), I think the Yacht Club nearby is a better bet.

The South shore of lake Michigan has plenty of surf spots along its miles and miles of sandy beaches. They work on winds from the North moving all length of lake Michigan water surface.
Ogden Dunes: West Beach - pounding waves on strong North winds. The beach has a bath house.
